LOS ANGELES ARTIST ANDREA BOWERS RECEIVES $10,000 FELLOWSHIP

On September 6, 2008, Los Angeles artist Andrea Bowers will receive the Contemporary Collectors: Orange County Annual $10,000 Fellowship for emerging or under-recognized Southern California artists. Bowers was among nine artists nominated by three Los Angeles-area curators and is the third artist to receive the prestigious fellowship. Angela Bowers was born in Wilmington, Ohio, in 1965 and lives and works in Los Angeles. She received her M.F.A. from California Institute of the Arts and her recent solo exhibitions include "The Weight of Relevance" at the Secession, Vienna, and Suzanne Vielmetter Projects, Los Angeles. Bowers is a multi-media artist and notes, "I am proud of the moniker 'feminist.' My work also addresses many other issues, both political and aesthetic." She is known for work ranging from exquisitely detailed drawings to video installations. Bowers was nominated for the 2008 Fellowship by Tyler Stallings, Director, UCR Sweeney Art Gallery, University of California, Riverside, who will discuss Bowers's work at the presentation of the award. The Contemporary Collectors: Orange County Fellowship Program was initiated in 2006 and previous artists who have received the award include Christine Nguyen (2006) and Joel Tauber (2007). Those Los Angels-area arts professionals who have participated in the nominations include Meg Linton, Director, Ben Maltz Gallery & Public Programs, Otis College of Art and Design; James Elaine, Curator, UCLA/Hammer Museum; critic Christopher Miles; Jay Belloli, Director of Gallery Programs, Armory Center for the Arts; Elizabeth Armstrong, then Chief Curator, Orange County Museum of Art; Clara Kim, Associate Director and Curator, REDCAT; Carol Eliel, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and Stallings. Contemporary Collectors: Orange County is an unaffiliated, not-for-profit, philanthropic organization, which supports artists and arts organizations in Southern California. In addition to the Fellowship Program, support has been provided to the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles for "WACK!" and "Alan Kaprow - Art as Life." END
